Joe Shaker There are so many factors in determining the ideal tech stack, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution.  We have to factor in the ATS, the candidate experience, the recruiter experience and the budget.  The best first step is to determine the best candidate experience for your organization and then build your stack around that so your technology supports it. Only then you can make the best use of the tech stack available to you. There are a variety of tech options that can help you do this. A robust professional network, like LinkedIn, allows companies to offer targeted media campaigns that will get their brand message in front of the right candidates. In addition, specific brand amplification tools like LinkedIn Elevate will help broaden reach and increase awareness. As video and graphics continue to be an effective way of conveying a talent brand, creation and editing tools like Visme and Canva are excellent for making original branded visuals. 7 Reasons Millennials Love Their Side Hustles More Than Their Jobs More and more millennials are starting to maintain a side hustle (a second job outside of their regular, full-time jobs).This increase of young people choosing to work over 40 hours a week is often attributed to lower wages, student loan debts, and other financial issues that millennials struggle with. However, while making more money is definitely part of why so many young people continue working after work, there are many other reasons that side hustles are much more than just extra cash. Side hustles help them develop as an individual While side hustles range from baking to driving an Uber, many side hustlers use this time as a chance to further develop themselves in many ways. A recent survey by Simple states that 57% of millennials say their side hustle helps them to develop as a person. By adding more responsibility into their daily routine and stepping outside of their comfort zone in many cases, it helps them to grow both personally and professionally. The money they are earning is for things they want, not things they need Millennials maintain side hustles for things like vacations, concert tickets, expensive makeup or anything else that makes them happy. Earning things that are more tangible or a life experience can be a lot more fun than paying your electric bill. This adds a layer of optimism to the work that side hustlers do and make the work more fun as a result. Learning new skills Approaching a side hustle as a learning opportunity is a great way to sharpen skills you may not be able to at your 9-5. From the same Simple study, 44% of millennials with a side hustle say it teaches them skills that make them more valuable as an employee. People in industries like the arts, IT and travel all allow you to sharpen your technical and people skills while making extra cash. Even if a side hustle isn’t mentally stimulating, millennials use that time to better themselves by reading, or studying other things.  Side hustles can be more fulfilling Most full time jobs require a lot of sitting in an office typing on a computer while making an effort to better a larger company or companies and not necessarily helping individuals or smaller businesses. The opposite can be said for side hustles, which are often an effort to help a small businesses, customer service or helping individuals in some way. This leads to millennials feeling more fulfilled in their work, because its easier to make a difference for an individual than it is to make a difference in a larger company setting. More Freedom Side hustles are part-time and usually much more flexible than a traditional full time job. This allows for more freedom around when hustlers are working and makes them feel more in control of their time spent. For example, dog walkers on the platform Rover can request to walk dogs whenever they have time, as opposed to being scheduled to walk a certain time. Meeting new people and communities Interacting with communities of people outside their usual bubble help side hustlers to meet new people and interact with groups they usually would not. Something as simple as learning how an unfamiliar group of people function, or react to different situations can be incredibly beneficial to any person’s personal growth in a passive, yet impactful way. Side hustles improve your mental health According to Psychology Today, there are studies that show millennials are at a higher risk of clinical depression than previous generations. This group values happiness over money in many situations, but as poetic as that sounds, this can sometimes lead to fiscal stress. While looking for a job that really fulfills them, side hustles are good way to achieve the “spark” they seek. Side hustles offer an alternative to putting the blame on a workplace when they feel dissatisfied in their work and offer an opportunity to take control of their own happiness. 3 Tricks for the BEST Job Search Follow Up No Excuses, No Mistakes Job Search Follow Up Tricks Do you play golf, tennis, or baseball? In virtually every sport, the coach will say, “follow through,” right? In business we call it “the last mile” or “execution excellence.” Your job search follow up is not only the key to securing a great job, but also to building your network. No Excuses Catch yourself when you think any of these. Excuse #1: “I knocked the interview out of the park, so no need to send anything since I’ll get the job.” Well, aside from being too confident, which could have hurt you in the interview, there is no excuse for not being polite. And what if you were good in the interview, but not great, and the next candidate did send a compelling thank you note? Excuse #2: “I don’t have their email address.” Lesson learned. Ask for all email addresses while you are interviewing. However, if you forgot, contact the recruiter, HR manager, or anybody who might be able to give it to you. Simply say, “I would like to send them a thank you note,” so your intention is clear. Excuse #3: “Thank you notes seem so phony. I’m not the thank you note type.” First, follow up notes should be sincere. Sheer appreciation for their time and for considering you as a candidate should be reason enough to take 5 minutes to review your notes and craft a thank you note. Second, if you are not the “thank you note type,” then learn to be one now! Excuse #4: “They told me I will not be the final choice for the position, so there is no need to thank them.” Wrong. You want to add your interviewers to your network and you may want to contact them again. And, what if that company has another position that opens up? Take the high road and always, always send a thank you note and stay in touch after that. In your thank you note, you may say, “If another position opens up within your organization, I am interested in being considered.” No Mistakes Most job seekers make at least one of these mistakes! Don’t be one of them. Mistake #1: Scathing follow-up emails from job seekers who think theyre out of the running. Mistake #2: Rudeness or impatience. If the hiring manager gave you a specific date or timeframe, give them some room. Hiring processes take time and you dont want to seem overly anxious. Mistake #3: One-line emails: Can you call me back? Mistake #4: Group thank you notesâ€" it’s not personal and group notes imply you are lazy. Mistake #5: In a personal thank you note, your copy and paste didn’t work so it was addressed, “Dear Sally” and it closed with, “Thank you, again, Bob.” Mistake #6: Misspellings, grammar, punctuation errors. Remember each communication is a writing sample for the employer! Mistake #7: Gimmicks. Do not send flowers, a gift, anything. Mistake #8: Asking a friend to “swing by” the hiring manager’s office and say, “How is Bob doing for your position hiring. Isn’t he great?” 3 tricks for the BEST job search follow up. Well, I’m not going to leave you hanging! Here are my 3 tricks to help you be the BEST in your job search follow up: Trick #1: Always appear gracious, positive, patient, and interested. Speak in a very respectful manner if youre leaving a voicemail message, acknowledging that, “I know you are very busy, but I wanted to follow up on the email I sent you and to say that I’m still very interested in the position.” Trick #2: When following up with an email, always attach the prior email you are referring to. If there was an attachment to the prior email, reattach it, as appropriate. Correcting Negative PerceptionsNegative perceptions can really get in the way of advancing your career, so you need to be on the lookout for them. Sometimes you can’t do much to change innate parts of your personality, but as long as you’re aware of them, you can manage them effectively. Consider the following strategies when faced with negative perceptions that may be a detriment to your personal brand:Behave in the opposite way. If you received feedback for being too cocky, then perhaps you don’t have to show your confidence quite so much. Avoid self-aggrandizing language and tone down the confidence. If your feedback was that you’re passive or indecisive, then maybe you should speak more loudly or be the first one to speak at a meeting or networking event.Anticipate dissonance and admit it upfront. If you know what the top three misperceptions about you are and how you generally rub people the wrong way, you can anticipate situations where these dissonances may occur. The best way to dissolve any potential bad feelings is to admit your weakness upfront: “I tend to get very excited about this topic, so if I come across as impulsive or hyper, just let me know and I’ll check myself. I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone.” Or “I’m generally a quiet person, but that doesn’t mean I’m passive. If I don’t say much during this meeting, it’s because I’m the type of person who likes to think through the whole problem.
